Development and application of high-throughput amplified fragment length polymorphism technique in Calluna vulgaris (Ericaceae) Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Borchert,Thomas; Gawenda,Inka.
Calluna vulgaris is an important ornamental crop of the horticultural industry in Europe. In order to improve breeding of this species, especially of the most important trait of ‘bud-flowering', the implementation of molecular techniques that allow rapid, reproducible and efficient screening of whole segregating populations e.g. for molecular marker and mapping approaches is a requirement. We therefore aimed to introduce the powerful tool of amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP®), a widely and successfully applied method, into our methodological assortment. As an essential prerequisite, the isolated DNA should be of adequate quality which is a common obstacle when dealing with woody species and their interfering secondary...

Estimating the effects of population size and type on the accuracy of genetic maps Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ferreira,Adésio; Silva,Marcia Flores da; Silva,Luciano da Costa e; Cruz,Cosme Damião.
Based on simulation studies, it was shown that the type and size of experimental populations can exert an influence on the accuracy of genetic maps. A hypothetical genome map (one chromosome with nine equidistant molecular markers) was generated for the following population types: F2 with dominant and co-dominant markers, backcrossing, recombinant inbred lines (RIL) and double-haploid. The population sizes were 50, 100, 150, 200, 500 and 1000 individuals and 100 simulations were made for each population. The inaccuracies of the populations with the lowest number of individuals were shown by inversions in the order of the markers and the establishment of more than one linkage group in up to 38% of the simulations, depending on the population type. Stress...

European Broad-Scale Seabed Habitat Maps Support Implementation of Ecosystem-Based Management ArchiMer
Andersen, Jesper H.; Manca, Eleonora; Agnesi, Sabrina; Al-hamdani, Zyad; Lillis, Helen; Mo, Giulia; Populus, Jacques; Reker, Johnny; Tunesi, Leonardo; Vasquez, Mickaël.
We have analyzed the development of “Broad-Scale Seabed Habitat Maps” (BSHM) and their potential use in a European context with regard to the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) implementation, MPA designation and network assessment as well as other applications of BSHMs. The analyses are anchored in BSHMs developed by a series of interlinked EU projects (e.g. UKSeaMap, BALANCE, MESH, Mesh Atlantic, EUSeaMap 2012, and EUSeaMap 2016) and all maps are based on environmental data. Some EU Member States have used BSHMs as part of their MSFD Initial Assessments published in 2012. However, we conclude that BSHMs are a prerequisite for another key MSFD activity, i.e. mapping of potentially cumulative effects of multiple human stressors. Further, BSHMs...

Extreme coefficients in Geographically Weighted Regression and their effects on mapping AgEcon
Cho, Seong-Hoon; Lambert, Dayton M.; Kim, Seung Gyu; Jung, Suhyun.
This study deals with the issue of extreme coefficients in geographically weighted regression (GWR) and their effects on mapping coefficients using three datasets with different spatial resolutions. We found that although GWR yields extreme coefficients regardless of the resolution of the dataset or types of kernel function, 1) the GWR tends to generate extreme coefficients for less spatially dense datasets, 2) coefficient maps based on polygon data representing aggregated areal units are more sensitive to extreme coefficients, and 3) coefficient maps using bandwidths generated by a fixed calibration procedure are more vulnerable to the extreme coefficients than adaptive calibration.

French phytoplankton monitoring: an exploration of optimum data presentation ArchiMer
Belin, Catherine.
Different ways are explored for presenting 12 years of data on phytoplankton species and toxins in shellfish collected along the French coast and within the framework of the French Phytoplankton Monitoring Network. The advantages and difficulties of aggregating data in different dimensions are discussed. For example, graphs appear suitable only for restricted areas, while mapping is necessary for results on regional or larger scales. Within each of these broad categories, considerable care is required when identifying the appropriate type of information and presentation.

Genetic linkage map of chicken chromosome 1 from a Brazilian resource population Scientia Agricola
Nones,Kátia; Ledur,Mônica Corrêa; Ruy,Deborah Clea; Baron,Erica Elias; Moura,Ana Silvia Alves Meira Tavares; Coutinho,Luiz Lehmann.
A genetic map provides insight into genome organization and chromosomal location of markers and genes, and is important for quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping. The objective of this study was to use a Brazilian resource population to construct a linkage map for chicken chromosome 1. Eighty microsatellite markers were tested and 26 informative markers were typed in an experimental F2 population developed by two generations of crossbreeding between a broiler sire line and a layer line. A total of 649 F2 individuals from seven full-sib families with about 95 F2 offspring each were genotyped. Multi-locus linkage analysis resulted in a chromosome 1 map of 26 ordered markers. Locus order was in general agreement with other published linkage maps, except for...

Habitat Scale Mapping of Fisheries Ecosystem Service Values in Estuaries Ecology and Society
O’Higgins, Timothy G.; Scottish Association for Marine Sciences; tim.ohiggins@gmail.com; Ferraro, Steven P.; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency;; Dantin, Darrin D.; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency;; Jordan, Steve J.; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency;; Chintala, Marnita M; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency;.
Little is known about the variability of ecosystem service values at spatial scales most relevant to local decision makers. Competing definitions of ecosystem services, the paucity of ecological and economic information, and the lack of standardization in methodology are major obstacles to applying the ecosystem-services approach at the estuary scale. We present a standardized method that combines habitat maps and habitat–faunal associations to estimate ecosystem service values for recreational and commercial fisheries in estuaries. Three case studies in estuaries on the U.S. west coast (Yaquina Bay, Oregon), east coast (Lagoon Pond, Massachusetts), and the Gulf of Mexico (Weeks Bay, Alabama) are presented to illustrate our method’s...

Hyperspectral and Lidar: Complementary Tools to Identify Benthic Features and Assess the Ecological Status of Sabellaria alveolata Reefs ArchiMer
Bajjouk, Touria; Jauzein, Cecile; Drumetz, Lucas; Dalla Mura, Mauro; Duval, Audrey; Dubois, Stanislas.
Sabellaria alveolata is a sedentary gregarious tube-building species widely distributed from southwest Scotland to Morocco. This species builds what are currently considered the largest European biogenic reefs in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (France). As an ecosystem engineer, S. alveolata generates small to large scale topographic complexity, creating numerous spatial and trophic niches for other species to colonize. Sabellaria reefs are also under anthropogenic pressures, leading locally to massive degradation. However, stakeholders lack spatially explicit measures of reef ecological status, at adapted spatial resolution to provide key management information for this protected habitat. Traditional field surveys are extremely time-consuming and rely on...

IDENTIFICATION OF SUITABLE AREAS FOR IRRIGATED RICE CROPPING USING MODIS IMAGES AND HAND MODEL REA
MENGUE,VAGNER P.; FONTANA,DENISE C..
ABSTRACT One of the most relevant activities of Brazilian economy is agriculture. Among the main crops in Brazil, rice is one of high relevance. The state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Southern Brazil, is responsible for 68.7% of domestic production (IBGE, 2013). The goal of this study was to develop a low-cost methodology with a regional scope to identify suitable areas for irrigated rice cropping in this state, using spectro-temporal behavior of vegetation index by means of MODIS images and HAND model. The rice-cropped area of this study was the southern half of the State. Using the HAND model, flood areas were mapped to identify irrigated rice cultivation. We used multi-temporal images of vegetation index from MODIS sensor, covering the period from August...

Impacts of climate change on water resources and agriculture in Sri Lanka: a review and preliminary vulnerability mapping AgEcon
Eriyagama, Nishadi; Smakhtin, Vladimir U.; Chandrapala, Lalith; Fernando, Karin.
There is ample evidence to suggest that Sri Lanka’s climate has already changed. However, the bigger question of national importance is what Sri Lanka’s climate will look like in 50 or 100 years and how prepared the country is to face such changes. This report reviews the status of climate change (CC) research/activities in Sri Lanka in terms of observed and projected climatic changes, their impacts on water resources and agriculture, CC mitigation and adaptation, and research needs. The study also developed a pilot level CC Vulnerability Index, which was subsequently mapped at district level. The maps indicate that typical farming districts such as Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragala, Ratnapura and Anuradhapura are the most vulnerable to CC due to their...

Integrating Expert Knowledge into Mapping Ecosystem Services Trade-offs for Sustainable Forest Management Ecology and Society
Brunner, Sibyl H.; Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems (PLUS), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ; brunner@nsl.ethz.ch; Altwegg, Juerg; Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems (PLUS), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ; altwegg@nsl.ethz.ch; Christen, Marc; WSL - Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF; christen@slf.ch; Bebi, Peter; WSL - Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF; bebi@slf.ch.
Mountain ecosystems are highly sensitive to global change. In fact, the continued capacity of mountain regions to provide goods and services to society is threatened by the impact of environmental changes on ecosystems. Although mapping ecosystem services values is known to support sustainable resource management, the integration of spatially explicit local expert knowledge on ecosystem dynamics and social responses to global changes has not yet been integrated in the modeling process. This contribution demonstrates the importance of integrating local knowledge into the spatially explicit valuation of ecosystem services. Knowledge acquired by expert surveys flows into a GIS-based Bayesian Network for valuing forest ecosystem services under a land-use and a...

Les nodules du pacifique central dans leur environnement géologique CAMPAGNES COPANO - 1979 ArchiMer
Pautot, Guy; Hoffert, Michel.
The cruises named COPANO have been undertaken during the summer 1979 on the R. V. Le Suroit of the CNEXO, as a part of an international research program I.C.I.M.E. The objective of this project was to study relatively small zones (a few km2) and to establish a relationship between characteristics of the manganese nodules and their environment. During the COPANO cruises, five zones have been studied: two in the northern Pacific, two in the southern Pacific and finally one in the equatorial Pacific. All the zones are centered on the longitude 134° Wand therefore their symmetry to the highly productive equatorial zone may be tested. As one of the results of the cruises is the relation between nodules and the bottom soil, established by sediment-sampling and a...
